On Thursday 8th May at 9:30pm over one thousand beacons of light will shine throughout the country to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the allied victory in Europe. The lighting of beacons is a long tradition of celebrating, with beacons now being used as a symbol of unity and a central point for outdoor gatherings and celebrations.
Peoples, families and communities of the great nation will be coming together to unite and celebrate this special day. VE Day 80 is not only a tribute to those who fought for the freedom we all enjoy today, but also a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have defined our lives ever since.
Unfortunately, Oldham Council have today confirmed that they are unable to carry out a beacon lighting ceremony tomorrow in Shaw Memorial Garden, Westway.
However, the Town Council has stepped in and will facilitate and manage the ceremony. The beacon will be lit at 9:30pm and members of the public are invited to attend from 9:00pm onwards for a period of reflection leading up to the lighting of the beacon, fostering a sense of unity and remembrance as we honour the heroes of World War 2. Former service personnel from the Royal British Legion (Shaw branch) will be in attendance.
